Modern technologies and models of machine learning algorithms open up possibilities that just a few years ago would have been considered, if not "miracles" or "wonders", then at least huge achievements.

When I got an opportunity to work with KUKA Robot arms I got an idea that its behavior can be programmed to look alive and considered as a thinking machine. This idea got an extra layer after all of those Anti-AI talks in the Internet (especially among the artists). At the same time, I saw a resemblance between the «Open AI» company’s logo and the Star of David symbol which reminded me about the Jews in Nazi Germany. And all of these brought me to the final idea how to make a statement dedicated to the situation around AI.

Even though the art always goes hand in hand with modern technologies, there are those who criticize new, better tools or new forms of artistic expression. With the massive development of machine learning algorithms in recent years, the fear of artificial intelligence as a special case of technophobia has received another round of misunderstanding not only among laymen, but already in the artistic community.

ARTOFFICIAL aims to shift the focus from this «xenophobic» tone and draw attention to topical issues that people should have in this field.

Aleksei Martyniuk

Aleksei Martyniuk is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker and lecturer. In his practice he often works with the theme of cyclicity and its possible forms. His video artworks don’t represent some subjective experience, but rather create conditions for its occurrence for the viewer. The artist uses a wide range of modern digital technologies and techniques, but he doesn’t put them on a spotlight – they are only supporting elements for the implementation of ideas. Even those artworks of Aleksei that involve 3D or AI are frame by frame edited and refined, so, despite their computer-generated nature, they remain to be «hand crafted».
